Commonwealth Day Observance, March 11th 2013
In preparation for its annual Commonwealth Day Observance, the Royal Commonwealth Society of PEI again invited the Graphic Arts students at Holland College to produce a poster depicting the theme of Commonwealth Day, this year “Opportunity through Enterprise”.
Ms. Katie Graham created the poster, featured below, which the artist was able to unveil at the February RCS luncheon meeting. Her work was much appreciated by those present. The poster was then displayed in a number of churches, business establishments and other locations around the city.
In the days leading up to Commonwealth Day, March 11th, the flags of the 54 Commonwealth member countries were displayed from the balcony at Confederation Court Mall in downtown Charlottetown with His Worship, Mayor Clifford
Lee, officially opening the presentation. An information table generated a number of inquiries about the Commonwealth
and the Society.
On Commonwealth Day, a public Observance was held at St. James Presbyterian Church (the “Kirk”) in Charlottetown.
Senior Piper and Drummer, Mr. Brady Singleton, Belfast Pipe and Drum Band, piped the Vice-Regal Party into the sanctuary – Their Honours, The Honourable H. Frank Lewis, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, and Mrs. Dorothy Lewis. His Honour then read the Commonwealth Day Message from Her Majesty The Queen. Sea, Army and Air Cadets representing the five Corps and Squadrons in the greater Charlottetown Area paraded the flags of the Commonwealth member countries around the interior of the Church as the names of the countries were read
aloud by the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Ms. Paula Biggar. The highly respected PEI Regiment Band provided musical accompaniment and entertainment, as did the talented Island women’s double trio “Arioso”.
The evening concluded with refreshments generously provided by the Presbyterian Women and RCS members.
The Royal Commonwealth Society of PEI is pleased to hold its annual Commonwealth Day Observance in celebration of the Commonwealth and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation are expressed to all who have participated and attended.
